Kasmene was a citadel of the ancient Greek town Syracuse, isolated on a hill in the hinterland on the highest point of today's province of Syracuse. The archaeological area of Ancient Noto is located in the hinterland, several miles from baroque Noto. In this place was the ancient town which was destroyed by the earthquake in 1693. Cava Ispica is a natural canyon located between Ispica and Modica which boasts most interesting archaeological sites. This medium-easy excursion starts at the archaeological area Cava d'Ispica Nord and continues along the northern path to the Grotto of Our Lady, the Saint's Oratory and the Baravitalla tomb. Kaukana was an ancient Byzanthine port on the southern coast of Sicily. Archaeological excavations set free the remains of the settlement mentioned by the historian Procopio di Cesarea.
