With the visit of the Neapolis archaeological park it's possible to discover the most important monuments of the ancient Greek and Roman Syracuse. You will learn about the history of the town and visit the ruins of the most important western Greek colony. The latomie were also prisons and our guide will lead you to the legendary 'Ear of Dionysius'. It is a huge grotto which, according to the legend, was used by the tyrant Dionysius as prison for his enemies. The grotto is famous also nowadays for its particular form and for the excellent acoustics. It's also possible to test the acoustics, singing a song inside the grotto. Nearby you will see the 'grotta dei cordari', the cave of the rope makers. The visit continues with the Greek theatre. The one of Syracuse was among the largests of the ancient world and is still used for classical plays. The guide will tell you about the archaeological details of this monument but also about the ancient Greek tragedies and about the modern theatre seasons. In the upper part of the theatre it's possible to admire the beautiful nymphaeum fountain and the enchanting scenery of Syracuse's great harbour. Inside the Neapolis park it's also possible to visit the altar of Hieron. It was dedicated to Zeus, the king of the gods and was built in the 3rd century B.C. At least you will learn about Roman Syracuse and visit the amphitheatre. After conquering the town, the Romans built this building for the gladiator's fights. Our guide will show you the most important parts of the amphitheatre and tell you about the gladiators.
